A Registered General Nurse or Registered Mental Nurse urgently required to manage a small home for people with learning difficulties.
Lovely working environment and great team. Management training will be given.

To manage a community home and to take initiative in ensuring that agreed standards are maintained in line with Home policies.  To act as the focus for all day to day issues, within and as they affect the home, and to liaise with the relevant agencies in the development of a support network for the residents of the home.

The post holder will, through the resources available to them, be responsible for the provision of care and support to assist in the management of the residents daily living requirements with respect for their individuality, privacy, dignity and emotional needs.

Responsible for

The day to day – 24 hour management of a community residential home for people with learning disabilities with dementia, and also to be practically involved with their care.  To assist them in living a full and meaningful life and work in close co-operation with associated day care and community specialist services.


Job Summary

The post holder will, through the resources available to them, be responsible for the provision of care and support to assist in the management of the residents daily living requirements with respect for their individuality, privacy, dignity and emotional needs.

Personal Specifications

The Home Manager will have an understanding of and commitment to the principles of community care and will preferably have a background in the care of people with learning disabilities and dementia.

To be able to relate effectively with all the professionals involved in the care of the residents and be able to demonstrate initiative and tact and relate effectively with other agencies and the community at large.


Main Responsibilities and Duties

A) Management

i. To be responsible for the day-to-day running of the home and management of staff.
ii. To be the named officer for Registration (National Care Standards act 2000) purposes, and to ensure that all requirements of registration are met. 
iii. To organise effective communication channels within the house, including regular staff meetings, handovers, communication books and diary.
iv. To help draw up, implement and monitor systems for house finances, including petty cash, resident’s personal finances and rent, and to be   responsible for keeping overall expenditure within allocated budget.
v. To ensure that supplies and services are ordered and effective stock control maintained.
vi. To ensure organisational policies (e.g. Equal opportunities, health and safety, Administration of medication, Management of finances etc.) are implemented.
vii. To work, and ensure that all staff also work in a way consistent with the principle of ‘normalisation’ and ‘equal opportunities’ – i.e. to give each resident practical skills and social status that are valued within their communities and to have anti-racist anti-sexist work practices which help residents value anti-discriminatory attitudes.

B) Residents

i. Responsible with the home staff for ensuring those activities in the home are structured to meet individual needs while respecting their individuality and personal dignity.
ii. To ensure that a regular opportunity is given to each resident to be involved in and agree an individual Programme Plan for their personal development and ensure that all staff are aware of and act in accordance with the plan.
iii. To ensure that each resident is given the opportunity to represent their views or have their views represented by their advocate or carer, including organising regular meetings with relatives / friends and ensuring regular residents meetings are held.
iv. To ensure that all medications are administered and kept securely, in line with company policy.
v. To co-operate with monitoring and quality initiatives in line with purchasers requirement, to improve the residents’ quality of life.
vi. To ensure that all team members deliver care and support while understanding their position as guests in the residents’ home.
vii. To prepare regular reports on the quality of service and the service outcome to demonstrate the extent to which residents have benefited.  To discuss these reports and the progress of residents with their carers and advocates.
viii. To ensure residents within the homes are given choices with regard to their lifestyle, choice of food / diet, recreation etc.
ix. To be involved in the selection, assessment and admission of new residents.  And to subsequently help new residents settle into the home and where applicable, residents to move out of the home.

C) Management / Personnel

i. Together with the Business Manager, be involved with the recruitment of and the
Selection of all staff and set agreed usage scales for all staff.
ii. To ensure staffing numbers meet agreed levels at all times and are reflective of
residents’ needs.
iii. To develop and maximise staff skill and redesign staff development programmes
to meet changing needs.
iv. To ensure implementation of appropriate company policies and compliance with
Legislation (e.g. Grievance, Disciplinary, Sickness, Equal Opportunities,
Employment and Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 National Care Standards Act. 2000.

v. To ensure that staff are aware of and carry out the policies and philosophy of the
Home, as set out in the Operational Policy.

vi. To be responsible for ensuring that there is a regular supervision and appraisal of performance and ability of all care staff and, where necessary, to provide the managerial and supervisory input required to ensure on-going development and support.
vii. To act in accordance with agreed standing financial instructions and to liaise with the Business Manager in reviewing use of allocated resources in a cost effective manner.
viii. To be responsible for ensuring that agreed company financial procedures concerning the handling of residents and household money are correctly applied.

D) Public Relations / Communications

i. To ensure that good communications systems are established and maintained and that agreed forums for discussion exist.
ii. To be responsible for the maintenance of a positive public image for the residents of the home through the establishment of good public relations, in particular with relatives, voluntary organisations, local community groups and the general public.
iii. To establish good liaison with other Home Mangers, the local community and other agencies and disciplines, ensuring a full integration of the home into the range of care provided by other community services.
iv. To establish and maintain professional relationships with General Practitioners and other service providers, e.g. dentists, chiropodists.
v. To keep the Business Manager informed of any difficulties encountered.
vi. To ensure that the Business Manger is informed at all times of all maintenance matters and that these are quickly carried out.

E) Confidentiality

i. All staff are required to respect confidentiality of all matters that they may learn relating to their employment, other members of staff and the general public.

F) Health and Safety

i. It is the general duty of every employee to take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and others, including the use of necessary safety devices and protective clothing and to co-operate with the management in meeting the responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act.  Any failure to take such care or any contravention of safety policy or managerial instructions may result in disciplinary action being taken.

G) Food Hygiene

i. It is the general duty of every employee to ensure compliance with the regulations of the Food and Hygiene ‘General’ Regulations 1970 and Food Act. 1984.

H) Rehabilitation of Offenders

i. This post is subject to an exemption order under the provision of Section iv (ii) of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. 1974.  The post is subject to CRB enhanced check.

I) Variation

In anticipation of future changes in service delivery and the need to keep an innovative and flexible approach to service provision the job description may need amending in the light of future operational experience.  This will be done in consultation with the post holder.
